This article is a continuation of the prior one dealing with fasting. Donald Whitney outlines 10 reasons to fast in his book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. We pick up with reasons six through ten in this article. 6. To Express Concern for the Work of God
Though many of us in North America may not have experienced this, imagine walking through a village in Rwanda or the Sudan after it was pillaged and savaged by ruthless murders and rapists. There are dead people lying along the roadside butchered by machetes with their limbs severed. The homes that they live in burned and destroyed. Everywhere you turn the stench of death waffles through the air.
You think, how can man do this? Where is God? Scenes like this would compel us to pray, but prayer might not be enough to satisfy our longing for healing. So we fast, weep and pray asking God to descend to this place of hell on earth and begin to heal it.
Nehemiah found himself in a similar situation. Jerusalem had been savaged by the Babylonians as the Jewish nation was exiled into captivity. Years later he traveled to Jerusalem and saw the devastation. Here’s how the Bible describes the scene in Nehemiah 1:3-4.
The tragedies you experience are probably not a graphic as the example, but may be equally devastating. Consider fasting as you ask for God’s healing.
7. To Minister to the Need of Others
Skipping a meal gives you time to minister to someone else in need. In our time crunch overscheduled world, many do not do things for others because they do not have time. By skipping a meal and using that time to meet with someone, you can minister to them.
Isaiah points this out here: Isaiah 58:3-7
As Whitney writes, “The kind of fasting that pleases God is the one that results in the concern for others, not just ourselves.” (p. 174) 8. To Overcome Temptation and Dedicate Yourself to God
Often the desires of our heart overcome what our minds know what is right. We succumb to temptation. Fasting along with prayer is another weapon that God uses to strengthen you to resist the devil so that he may flee from you. (James 4:7) Jesus did this exact thing when he had his show down with the devil as recorded in Matthew 4:1-11. What is the one thing that keeps you in bondage? The thing that tempts you and you can not overcome? Allow God to strengthen you by fasting so that temptation may loosen its grip upon you as you rededicate yourself to God’s ways, not your ways. 9. To Seek Deliverance or Protection
When we find ourselves in a bind many of us pray, but have you considered fasting? The Bible is full of situations when people fast because they are in a bind. Psalm 109 is an example of seeking protection while fasting.
10. To Express Love and To Worship God
Whitney writes, “Fasting can be and expression of finding your greatest pleasure and enjoyment in life from God. That’s the case when disciplining yourself to fast means that you love God more than food, that seeking him is more important to you than eating. This honors God and is a means of worshiping Him as God. It means your stomach isn’t your god as is it is with some (Philippians 3:19). Instead it is God’s servant, and fasting proves it because you’re willing to sublimate its desires to those of the Spirit.” (p. 176)
Who knew that there are so many reason that the Bible calls us to fast? If you have been convicted that you need to start a routine of fasting, please check with your medical doctor to make sure your body can handle it.
Skipping a meal is one thing, but going on a sustained fast is another. If you have a health condition like diabetes, it may be very challenging and possibly life threatening if your fast is not carefully monitored.
If you find yourself in this boat, consider abstaining from something other than food.
Now we turn it over to you. What has been your experience with fasting? For those who have done it, which blessings have your received? How has God protected or delivered you from harm or temptation? Give us your thoughts below.

I do fast, but I have found that when I do it on my own initiative it does not go well (whether it is my motive or attitude I am not sure), but when I do it after being called by the Lord to do it the results are amazing. I come closer to the Lord, He gives me insight about things that were not even actually on my mind and He tells me when it is over. Quite a blessed event..on His terms.
